In 1954, Rolex created the GMT Master on demand for Pan-Am airline pilots, whose specific need for a dual time zone (GMT) watch proved useful during flights and time zone disorientation due to heavy travel schedules. With the GMT Master watch, pilots were able to simulaneously track local time, as well as their home time zone. For them, Rolex created a caliber which had an extra (fixed) 24-hour hand and a rotatable bezel which you can set to the time zone you want to keep track of. The first models used Calibers 1575, 3075 and 3175. In 1983, Rolex introduced the GMT Master II, which featured a practical scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and the Caliber 3185. It also featured an independantly adjustable 24-hour hand that allowed the wearer to keep track of three time zones by keeping the 24-hour hand on GMT time and setting the 12-hour hand to local time. By this time, there were many other competitors and watches with the same functions and features. However, many pilots continued to favor the Rolex model. In 2007, Rolex introduced the new GMT Master II Anniversary model with a green GMT hand and scratch-proof ceramic bezel. This new model also had a new 3186 caliber movement with a smoother setting 24-hour hand. Initially only available in yellow gold (ref. 116718), the GMT Master II Anniversary model is now available in steel (ref. 116710), and steel and gold (ref. 116713).
